Vocational training for young people in Bangladesh

Salam Charity’s new project is helping school drop-outs to learn relevant skills to enter the job market

The education gap

In Bangladesh, too many children are unable to go to school regularly. They may be working to support their families; or they may be compelled to marry at a young age to improve their families’ finances.

As a result, only 64% of children complete secondary school, and those who do attend aren’t achieving basic competencies – only 25% of graduates were competent in literacy and numeracy, according to a recent report from UNICEF.

This widespread lack of education means that many young people have poor prospects in the job market.

Our new project – the Impact Vocational Centre – will deliver vocational courses, like tailoring, computer skills, driving, and graphic design. It will also provide help for job-hunters, helping to boost the local economy and bring confidence and hope.

The Vocational Centre has opened two courses: Mobile Repairs and Graphic Design. We have welcomed 60 students as part of the first intake. They’re made up of school and college drop-outs as well as people who have been struggling with unemployment. We aim to equip them with practical skills and knowledge, and then support them to find a job.
