WINTER 2024
Winter brings unimaginable hardships for vulnerable families in Palestine (Gaza), Pakistan, Lebanon, Jordan, and Afghanistan. As the temperatures drop, people in poverty –living in makeshift shelters or poorly insulated homes – have no protection against the freezing cold. In refugee camps it’s even worse, as people huddle under old tarpaulins, exposed to the elements.
For all these people, winter drastically increases the risk of illness, malnutrition, and even death. Countless families, especially children, are more likely to contract respiratory infections, frostbite, and other life-threatening conditions.
Every winter, Salam Charity works tirelessly to bringaid to those in need. Our winter kitsinclude essentials like fuel, food packs, blankets, and heaters. Can you help us to deliver more life-saving kits this season?
HOW YOU CAN HELP
Every donation to our winter campaign will buy essential supplies for families in Pakistan, Lebanon, Jordan, Afghanistan and Palestine (Gaza). We’ll have teams in each country delivering winter fuel, blankets, heaters, and food packs. These supplies will help families to stay warm, nourished, and healthy during the coldest time of the year.
Cold weather takes lives. But you can protect the most vulnerable people from the dangers of winter – and give them the warmth and care they need to endure the cold.
THE HARSH REALITY
- Nearly 800,000 children in Afghanistan have no proper shelter this winter.
- Last winter, a sudden blizzard killed 22 children and 13 adults in Pakistan. (BBC)
- In Jordan, a 19-year study showed that 8.36% of all refugee deaths were caused by cold weather. (Science Direct)
- 400,000 children have been displaced from their homes in Lebanon – they’re now at high risk of cholera and skin disease. (STC)
Case Study
On top of the 1.5 million refugees in Lebanon, 1.2 million people have recently been internally displaced. Many of these people have fled to communal shelters or camps and are surviving in poor-quality tents, which are not suitable for winter.
Mariam, a mother of three, lives in one such tent. It has no heating or insulation. The cold is intense, and her children used to wake up shivering. When the rain is heavy, the tent floods, leaving the ground damp and cold.
Mariam’s family was struggling to stay healthy. Her youngest child had developed a persistent cough. The family relied on the small amount of aid they receive, but it wasn’t enough.
Thanks to donations from people like you, Salam Charity gave Mariam’s family blankets, a heater, and fuel. This winter, our teams will continue to travel around and bring life-saving supplies to everyone they meet, helping more families to survive the freezing conditions this winter.
