Deployment report: Uganda

In October, Salam Charity took a team of 14 on a deployment to Uganda. We travelled around delivering urgent aid and life-changing cash grants.

Essential supplies

Before joining a deployment trip, our volunteers are asked to meet a fundraising target. This enables us to buy and deliver lots of aid – and it allows volunteers to see exactly where their funds are going.

This trip took us to Uganda, where 59% of people are suffering from moderate or serious food insecurity. We visited Kampala, Jinja, Mayuge, Iganga and Mbale and distributed lots of essential aid, including:

  • 200 food packs (each feeding a family for one month)
  • 600 stationery kits for children
  • 2 sewing machines
  • 30 bicycles
  • 3 tricycles
  • 4 goats
  • 1 wheelchair
  • 100 branded jerry cans
  • 10 Qurans

An extra-special Kids’ Fun Day

As part of this trip, our team organised and ran a Fun Day for a local orphan centre. We gave out 50 branded t-shirts and 50 “happiness kits” (packed with art supplies and stationery). After a fun day filled with games and activities, we dished up 50 delicious hot meals (designed for kids – of course!).

Emergency funding

While we’re travelling around the villages, we meet people to learn more about their circumstances and the things they need. The team has access to an emergency fund.

On this trip, we identified 30 people who were in dire financial need. We gave each one a cash grant towards essentials (like mattresses, health treatment, or roof repairs). One other person asked us to help them start a business, so we funded that too.

To support our local team on their future deliveries, we also bought two new boats.

How you can help

In Uganda, hunger is still a serious issue. There’s also a lack of safe water sources, leading to widespread health problems. We’re stepping up our work in the country to provide support to communities and, on a local level, struggling families and individual entrepreneurs.

Please help. We’ll use your donations to buy more wheelchairs, medical packs, and water wells for vulnerable people in Uganda.
