Marrakech Marathon 2024

In January, our team of 15 runners completed the Marrakech half-marathon, lapping the city’s historic ramparts. Thanks to their devotion and determination, they raised £11,000 for our vital work supporting victims of the Moroccan earthquake.

Saturday – local volunteering

This year, our Marathon runners had an extra day in Morocco. They were accompanied by our staff to support our local partners in organising an Orphan Fun Day.

Hosted at a local children’s home, the event included entertainment (with henna, magician, music, and bouncy castle) and an informal football tournament – our volunteers were delighted to give out awards! There was also basketball, boxing and judo on offer (for children and volunteers). After all that activity, everyone was bound to be hungry – and our team got involved with preparing and serving food.

Sunday – time to race!

On the 28th January, thousands of runners from all over the world gathered to run the 34th Marrakech Marathon. It’s a flat route through the Menara gardens, around the world-famous Medina and along the 12th century ramparts of Marrakech, past palm, orange and olive trees.

Fundraising for Salam Charity, 14 runners ran the half-marathon – with a fastest time of 1:48hrs (wow). One runner entered the full marathon of 26 miles (finishing in an amazing 3:21hrs). Well done to the whole team!

Supporting victims of the Moroccan earthquake

In September 2023, an earthquake of 6.8 magnitude caused great devastation to buildings in Morocco, killing thousands and rendering around 38,000 people homeless. Salam Charity has been delivering essential aid such as tents, food, clothing, mattresses and hygiene kits, helping displaced people to survive.

Our runners raised £11k for the campaign – but you don’t have to run a Marathon to become a supporter. Please give whatever you can spare today.
