Overview

EVERY DAY MORE THAN 690 MILLION PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD GO TO SLEEP WITHOUT EATING AND 1 IN 3 SUFFER FROM MALNUTRITION.

At Salam we passionately believe that nobody should suffer from hunger and malnutrition. Food insecurity, which was exacerbated by the global pandemic, has far-reaching consequences which damage people’s opportunities, ambitions, and relationships as well as quality of life.

An end to world hunger will produce better health, education and economic outcomes. So we work with vulnerable communities in two ways: firstly, to develop holistic and sustainable solutions, and secondly, to deliver supplies which meet their immediate and regular needs.

Our aims

It’s our goal to eliminate hunger and malnutrition. To play our part, we aim to:

  • Fight against extreme poverty, delivering short-term food supplies as well as long-term initiatives.
  • Give local people involvement in, and ownership of, our projects (such as solar-powered wells and TukTuks).
  • Deliver a sustainable supply of food.

PREVIOUS WORK

Our regular food parcels provide food security to people in countries all over the world.

Typically planned to feed a family of five for about a month, the parcels contain essentials like rice, flour, sugar, oil, chickpeas and lentils – things that store well and supply important carbs and protein. Our food parcels alleviate worry and enable people to concentrate on improving their conditions.

CASE STUDY

Ethical Qurbani

Our Qurbani project has allowed thousands of families to participate in the celebrations during the month of Dhul Hijjah. We source meat from local farmers who maintain strict ethical principles, selecting mature and well-reared animals. The meat is shared between families for Eid-al-Adha, giving them a valuable source of protein and nourishment for several weeks.

Our hot meals distributions seek to address hunger and nourishment disparities by providing warm, nutritious meals to individuals in need. A hot meal provides a mental and physical boost, improving health and well-being and reducing hunger. We serve hot meals to 100-200 people, depending on the location and each one is planned to meet an adult’s daily nutritional needs.

  • Afghanistan and Bangladesh: £3 per meal
  • Pakistan, Uganda, Yemen and Ghana: £2 per meal

We offer the opportunity to gift a sacrificial sheep, goat or bull to a family in Lebanon, Pakistan, or Bangladesh. It is a valued source of food which can provide nutrition to one or more families for several weeks.

  • Lebanon: For a sheep with an average weight of 50KG, the cost is £290, while an average-sized bull weighing 450KG is priced at £1700.
  • Pakistan: A sheep costs £130.
  • Bangladesh: A goat costs £130.

Designed to sustain a family of five over the course of a month, these packages include fundamental provisions such as rice, flour, sugar, oil, chickpeas, and lentils (varies by location). Our essential food packages provide individuals with the means to sustain themselves for a month, alleviating concerns about food scarcity. This support enables them to concentrate on family care or income generation.

If you would like to combat food insecurity and world hunger, providing a food pack for one-month costs £60.
